Additional Details

First state. A tribute to the Compromise of 1850 and the three great senators of the era: Henry Clay, John Calhoun, and Daniel Webster, who appear in the center foreground. President Millard Fillmore sits off to the right, helpfully propping up a shield. James Buchanan, Sam Houston, and Stephen Douglas appear in the background, among many others. Reilly 1852-7.

The plate for this engraving was later re-worked for sale in 1861, with a beardless Lincoln's head transplanted atop John Calhoun's body; a third state added a beard to Lincoln's face.
